Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Everything you need to know about SGPA, CGPA, and grade conversions.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) reflects your academic performance in one semester, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is your overall average across multiple semesters. In simple terms, SGPA is a semester-by-semester score, and CGPA combines all semesters.
Multiply each course's credit hours by its grade point, sum those values, then divide by the total credits for that semester. Use our SGPA Calculator to do this automatically.
First calculate each semester's SGPA. Then use each semester's credits and SGPA to compute a weighted average: (Σ(Semester Credits×SGPA))÷(Σ Semester Credits). Our CGPA Calculator performs this in one step for all your semesters.
A common formula is Percentage = (SGPA – 0.75) × 10. For example, SGPA 8.0 becomes (8.0–0.75)×10 = 72.5%.
Generally, Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.0 translates to about 76%.
You can reverse the formula: SGPA ≈ (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75. For example, 72.5% gives SGPA ≈ 8.0 (on a 10-point scale).
Use CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example, 70% corresponds to CGPA ≈ 7.37.
A 7.5 is generally above average. It often equates to about 67–71%. Top universities may prefer 8.0 or above, but 7.5 is respectable and often meets cutoff for jobs/colleges.
SGPA/CGPA provide a standardized way to compare performance across different curricula. They account for credit weight and allow easy conversion to percentage when needed.
On a 10-point scale, the maximum SGPA or CGPA is 10.0 (which corresponds to 100%).
No, they typically range from 0.0 to 10.0.
Many do, but some have slight variations. Our tools cover common methods. Use the calculator for your specific university if available, or consult your syllabus for exact rules.
In most systems, a fail earns 0 grade points for that course, and its credits typically aren't counted in your passed credits. This lowers your SGPA/CGPA. You can re-take the course to improve it. Always confirm with your college's policy.

7 CGPA is considered above average in most Indian colleges. It is decent for placements and government exam eligibility, though 7.5+ is preferred for top opportunities.
6 CGPA is pass and acceptable, but it falls in average range. Students aiming for better jobs or higher studies should target 7+ CGPA.
8.00 CGPA in percentage = 76%. Using the formula CGPA × 9.5 = Percentage: 8.00 × 9.5 = 76%. This is the standard conversion followed by most Indian universities.
